Top 5 Exercises to Stay Active with Joint Pain!

We are a group of health professionals including Physios, Massage Therapists and Personal Trainers wanting to answer your common questions on pain and dispel any myths surrounding pain and exercise.

So what are the top 5 exercises to stay active with joint pain?

This is a fantastic question which has a simple answer...it depends! Ok perhaps not that simple after all. It all depends at what stage your injury is at and how tolerable your joint is to the load you would like to put through it. We need to break down our activities into force through a joint so let's look at the following activities as a continuum of pressure:

Low Pressure (Swimming/Pilates/Yoga)

Moderate Pressure (Cycling/Walking)

High Pressure (Jog/Run/Strength Training)

We need to use our knowledge on Optimal Loading (See Blog) and whether you should you rest when you're in pain (See Blog) to understand where you should sit within the activities of the continuum.

Staying active with joint pain can be challenging, but the right exercises can make a significant difference. So here are five exercises that can help:

  1. Walking: A low-impact exercise that improves cardiovascular health and joint mobility.

2. Swimming: The buoyancy of water reduces stress on joints while providing a full-body workout.

3. Pilates: Focuses on core strength and stability, which supports joint health.

4. Cycling: A great way to stay active without putting too much strain on your joints.

5. Strength Training: A fantastic way to improve muscle strength to support the joints

At Back2Front, our classes and personalized exercise plans incorporate these and other effective exercises to help you manage joint pain. Engaging in these activities can improve your overall fitness and reduce pain.

If you are experiencing pain and discomfort, it is best to be assessed by a health professional who can guide you on what activity is safe for you to complete to aid your recovery.
